What personal data we collect and why

Cookies

This site uses cookies – small text files that are placed on your machine to help the site provide a better user experience. In general, cookies are used to retain user preferences, store information for things like shopping carts, and provide anonymized tracking data to third party applications like Google Analytics. As a rule, cookies will make your browsing experience better. However, you may prefer to disable cookies on this site and on others. The most effective way to do this is to disable cookies in your browser. We suggest consulting the Help section of your browser, or take a look at the Cookies and You website which offers guidance for all modern browsers. If you disable cookies, please note that some parts of this website may become inaccessible or not function properly.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves as if the visitor has visited the other website directly.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

If you follow a link to another website, their privacy policy and cookie policy applies.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics to enable us to monitor and analyze web traffic and to keep track of anonymized user behaviour.

Google Analytics is a web analysis service provided by Google LLC or by Google Ireland Limited, depending on the location (“Google”). Google utilizes the Data collected to track and analyze the use of this website, to prepare reports on its activities and share them with other Google services.

Google may use the Data collected to contextualize and personalize the ads of its own advertising network.

This integration of Google Analytics anonymizes your IP address. It works by shortening Users’ IP addresses. Only in exceptional cases will the complete IP address be sent to a Google server and shortened within the US.

Google Analytics stores cookies in your browser. Data is processed in the United States. See their Privacy Policy. You can also Opt Out. Google is Privacy Shield certified.

Advertising

We may use adverts and affiliate links on this site to help support the costs of running the site. These will generally be Google Adwords ads, and affiliate links to online stores such as Amazon, Kobo or Apple. We also use geo-targeted links to send you to your local store (such as to amazon.co.uk if you are in the UK, or amazon.com if you are in the USA).

Third parties may advertise on our website. In doing so, those parties, their agents or other companies working for them may use technology that automatically collects information about you when their advertisement is displayed. They may also use other technology such as cookies or JavaScript to personalise the content of, and to measure the performance of their adverts.

Who we share your data with

Our website is hosted in the USA by DreamHost.

We may also use outsourced services in countries outside the European Union from time to time in other aspects of our business.

Accordingly data obtained within the UK or any other country could be processed outside the European Union.

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also see and edit that information.

We review the personal data we hold at regular intervals and delete permanently or anonymize any personal data which is no longer necessary.

Google Analytics data is retained for 26 months after your last activity on this site.

How we protect your data

We have implemented security policies and technical measures to safeguard the personal data we collect. We maintain physical, electronic and procedural safeguards that comply with applicable law, including the GDPR, to safeguard personal data from accidental loss, destruction or damage and unauthorised access, use and disclosure.

What data breach procedures we have in place

We will inform you of any breach of your data within 72 hours of becoming aware, either by email, by a notice on the website, or both.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where we send your data
